Laboratory exams to detect microorganisms in gingival sulcus have been developed for different reasons, such as dental plaque specifi- city, identification of risk of the disease and assess the diagnosis of periodontal disease. The aim of this paper was to study through dental literature review the most important microbiological assays used in periodontology to target subgingival pathogens. Bacterial media, immunology and enzymatic assays, analysis of DNA, dark- field and phase contrast microscopy and biochemical markers have been used for this purpose. The surveys showed that criterious analy- sis to select the best exam is necessary and there is a relantionship beetween the presence of subgingival pathogens and the risk of de- velopment of periodontal disease.
