We investigated the hydraulic characteristics of an in-ground stilling basin (ISB) below a flood mitigation dam (FMD). The ISB structure is adapted to be ecologically transparent for fish migration and sediment transport through consideration of two lateral free spaces at the ISB end. We attempted to assess the energy dissipation performance of ISB by considering the interdependence between ISB geometry and flow pattern. The experimental results evidence there is a significant correlation between flow patterns and ISB geometry.
