Autoimmune hepatitis represents a chronic mainly periportal hepatitis with lymphocytic infiltrates, plasma cells and piecemeal necrosis. It is characterised by female preponderance, hypergammaglobulinemia, circulatory antibodies and a good response to immunosuppressive treatment.
