The eighteenth century can be defined as a century of paradoxes, advances and survivals. This work wants to exemplify this last trinomial through the careers of the intendants that exercised in Mallorca during the reign of Charles IV and observing others named in previous reigns. The implication of some of this men in promoting and economy improvement projects, according to the Court aims, as well as their own training and even their writing production, contrast with the profiles seen at the beginning of the 18th century, but, in the end, everything uses to be blinded by their devotion to the nobility, by the value given to war merits, and also by the desire of a better social rank, using, if needed, classic formulas as ancestry, family and clientelism. Likewise, a case study, the intendant Miguel Banuelos, acts out like no other this coexistences century.
