This article studies the history of the Italian reception of the works by Benito Jeronimo Feijoo by means of one of its main episodes: the quotation of Feijoo’s discourse "Musica de los templos" ( Teatro critico universal , volume I, 1726) made by Pope Benedict XIV in his encyclical letter Annus qui (1749). It also analyzes the implications of this episode in the context of the polemics among Feijoo and his contemporary contradictors such as Francisco Soto y Marne. Amid other possibilities, the article justifies the option of Cardinal Angelo Maria Quirini as the actual transmitter of Feijoo’s work to Benedict XIV.
