EnglishThis paper aims to clarify the process that resulted in the suspension of the Portuguese Inquisition from 1674 to 1681. The New Christians produced several documents in Rome that invalidated the action of the Portuguese Holy Office, calling it arbitrary and only interested in keeping the confiscated wealth of defendants. In turn, the inquisitors answered every complaint asserting their independence from the papacy and explaining the details of their legal procedure. The contention was unfolded at the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition in which acted cardinals and the pope himself. In this sense, will be examined the exchange of letters, booklets, official papers and other documents produced in the heat of the dispute that had begun and flourished as a plea for mercy (forgiveness) and ended as a call for justice by the victims of the infamous tribunal. portuguesEsse artigo tem como objetivo compreender o processo que culminou nas suspensoes do Santo Oficio portugues, entre os anos de 1674 e 1681.
