EnglishMen have needed to hide valuable objects. In order to achieve this aim many pieces of furniture with security systems and secret compartments have been designed. Chests and cabinets were the most common in the Modern Ages. The chest developed as a secure container for transport and housing. The cabinet, meanwhile, is a piece of furniture that was first made in the 16th Century for the same purpose, but it developed as an exhibition cabinet and, in some German samples highly valued in Spain, they become in cabinets of curiosities which indicated the owners culture and offered knowledge.
