Structural dynamics and spatial interrelationships in horticulture and fruticulture systems. Areas of intensive agriculture in different regions of Europe are undergoing a dynamic development process. Specialised horticulture is concentrated in southern regions which have a favourable climate, but is also practised in areas near marketplaces. Fresh fruit and vegetable trade reflects growing competition between the different production sites which is further enhanced by the supplying of large European consumer markets. The importance of distance from markets has changed over time. Variations in the seasonal availability and quality of local and regional production has allowed a temporal staggering of spaces used in the agribusiness system as well as a diversification
