The inland areas of the Valencian Community are currently enjoying a high level of agricultural development due to, among other things, the spread of irrigation. The Vinalopo area in Alicante was the first to experience this growth, and improvement in other regions was due to the inward expansion of fertile coastal irrigation lands. Today, the different types of water ownership or tenancy include Associations of Irrigators, Agrarian Transformation Societies, mercantile societies and individual well owners. These organizations and individuals devise and administer plans for water usage and distribution, and are an important factor in the economic progress of the region.
