Selenium is an essential trace element\udin humans, the majority of it\udoccurring in selenoproteins. These\udproteins have several known physiologic\udfunctions; they are important\udantioxidants, maintain normal thyroid\udfunction, and are thought to\udplay a role in inhibiting tumor\udgrowth. There has been considerable\udinterest in studying selenoproteins\udin serum because the selenium\udconcentrations reported for many\udpopulations are less than those required\udfor optimum activity of selenoenzymes.\udThis may have both\udlong- and short-term consequences\udfor human health
