Many mitochondrial pathologies are quantitative disorders related to tissue-specific deletion, depletion, or overreplication of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). We developed an assay for the determination of mtDNA copy number by real-time quantitative PCR for the molecular diagnosis of such alterations.
