Because of genetic polymorphisms, cytochrome P450 2D6 (Cyp2D6) activity in humans varies widely and alters the metabolism of commonly used drugs such as antidepressants, neuroleptics, and cardioactive agents. Severe adverse effects or resistance to therapy may result.
