This study urges us to describe and to understand the attitude and the point of view of France on Islam in a particular territory, Senegal, and over a specific period: that of colonialism. In this West African colony, the French policy vis-à-vis Islam and Muslims is at the same time a pragmatic policy and a vision of the other. We thus suppose that it fluctuated, even clashed, but it especially presented a common core syllabus consisting of practices and knowledge.
