2008 saw the formulation of the new intercollegiate MRCS examination. The biggest change saw the old structured interview, best known as the 'viva,' and separate clinical exam scrapped and combined into an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), the new part B. On successful completion of this examination you gain membership of the Royal College of Surgeons. Unlike the old system every candidate is allowed four attempts at passing the examination irrespective of time elapsed from successful completion of part A; however, if you are unlucky with your fourth attempt you are never able to enter any part of the MRCS examination again.
