Increasing numbers of surgeons are incorporating the principles of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) into their routine practices. The benefits are becoming clear and are much beloved of both clinicians and hospital management, with reduced lengths of inpatient stays and lower financial costs at no additional, measurable detriment to the patient. However, what do the patients think? Are we pushing them too far, too fast?
