As one of the most common genetically inherited diseases in the world, beta thalassemia continues to be a major health problem in our country, too. In our country, the carrier rate is around 2%. The carriers’ appearance is usually normal and this reveals the necessity of screening programs. In Mugla, which is one of the places where thalassemia is frequently seen, occured a significant reduction in the number of cases, through regularly conducted screening programs.
