The major effect of growth hormone is acceleration of linear growth. It also regulates protein, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism. Growth hormone increases protein synthesis, lipolysis, and serum glucose levels. It increases bone mineral density by increasing bone maturation. Growth hormone increases erythropoiesis and decreases serum ferritin levels. IGF-1 that is produced in the liver by growth hormone causes an increase in the transportation of amino acids and glucose into cells. Excessively increased IGF-1 may cause mitogenic effects. Growth hormone treatment aids in decreasing depression, increasing self-esteem and quality of life.
