Place names have changed with the rest of the vocabulary during the development of the Estonian language. However, with place names characteristic developments have occurred that differ from the general vocabulary. Irregular shortening, group transition, folk ety- mology and adaptation have occurred. This article will give a brief review of each specifi c development and will give examples, based on the settlement names in Kiili.
