THE DISSERTATION EXAMINES THE AUTOMATIC PROCESSING OF MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE IN THE LEXICAL, GRAMMATIC, MORPHOLOGICAL, SYNTACTIC AND SEMANTIC LEVEL, CONCENTRATING IN THE FIRST THREE LEVELS. THE METHODS USED BELONG TO THE FIELD OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THEY ARE RULE BASED. THE RULES ARE MAINLY EXPRESSED ASFINITE STATE AUTOMATA. IN PARTICULAR, THE FOLLOWING ISSUES ARE DESCRIBED: TWO NOVEL ALGORITHMS FOR INCREMENTAL CONSTRUCTION OF DIRECTED ACYCLIC WORLD GRAPHS, TWO MORPHOLOGICAL PROCESSORS FOR MODERN GREEK LANGUAGE (ONE OF THEM BASED ON THE TWO - LEVEL THEORY OF KOSKIENNIEMI), A BIDIRECTIONAL GRAPHEME TO PHONEME (AND VICE VERSA) TRANSDUCER, A SYNTACTIC PARSER USING A UNIFICATION BASED GRAMMAR, A SEMANTIC ANALYSER FOR TEMPORAL EXPRESSIONS, LEXICOGRAPHIC UTILITIES AND A GRAMMATICAL FUNCTION LIBRARY IN PROLOG LANGUAGE. IN THE THEORETICALLEVEL, THE DISSERTATION PROVES THE ABILITY /EFFICIENCY OF THE TWO - LEVEL MORPHOLOGICAL MODEL TO DESCRIBE THE PHENOMENA OF MODERN GREEK MORPHOLOGY.
