The devastation of the December 2004 tsunami that struck Southeast Asia prompted former SEG President Craig Beasley to ask “What can geophysicists do?” to help prevent the death and destruction of such natural and environmental threats. The creation of Geoscientists Without Borders® (GWB), SEG's program to fund projects that advance the science of applied geophysics to solve humanitarian problems, was the response. More than a decade later, one of the newest projects to receive funding from SEG is focused on exactly the kind of problem that resulted in the creation of GWB: tsunami preparedness.
