The Society of Exploration Geophysicists has been known by a couple of names. The Society of Economic Geophysicists, as it was originally named, was founded in 1930 in Houston, Texas. A year later, the name was changed to Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG) as a division of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG). The SPG technical journal, Geophysics, first was published in 1936, and a year later, the society's name was changed to the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). By the mid-1940s, membership exceeded 1,000, and a business office was established in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Please note that in about 1946, the SEG Constitution was amended to allow local SEG Sections to be formed.
