The people at the SEG Foundation are pretty smart. A few years ago, they started to invite me to the Donors' Luncheon at the Annual Meeting, even though I was not a donor. It turned out the time was right for me. I have had a reasonably good career in geophysics and I make a comfortable living, so the idea of giving back — or rather, “giving forward,” as we say perhaps more aptly these days — started to feel right.
