Cathepsin D has been demonstrated for the first time using an immunocytochemical approach and fluorescence microscopy. It has been localized in chick epithelium-like cells and in cells of synovia from joints of rabbits with an experimental arthritis. The enzyme is associated with lysosome-like organelles: it also has a diffuse cytoplasmic distribution in these cells.
