NOD proteins are part of innate immunity mechanisms. They play a role in epithelial barrier functions and inflammatory responses to bacteria. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the NOD1 gene have proven to be associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and asthma.
