Nutritional practices in Scottish ICUs vary widely, according to a survey carried out in 2006. Most striking is the variation in the use of parenteral nutrition and naso-jejunal feeding. Nutrition teams have been recommended for all acute hospitals and may aid in the management of difficult cases. Evidence-based guidelines for critical care nutrition are available and delivery of nutrition may be improved by the use of these guidelines. Regular audit of nutritional delivery is suggested to ensure optimal feeding of intensive care patients.
