The field of computational lexicography concerns itself with the utilisation of information technology tools for the construction and maintenance of dictionaries for human and computer use. This book is a selection of articles from a workshop of the same title held in Marina di Grosetto, Italy in May 1986, in which issues relating to the lexicon were discussed from a variety of perspectives. Thus, the book joins a well established line of compilations on the subject (e.g. Evens, 1988; Boguraev and Briscoe, 1989; Zernik, 1992; Briscoe et al., 1993; Atkins and Zampolli, 1994). As the editors suggest, the book has historical importance, in addition to research value, as it identified the primary issues in the field and set forth a research programme for computational lexicography. It also attests to the wide ranging influence that the late Donald Walker had in the field of Natural Language Processing (NLP).
