meister demonstrated that mental energy and focus were limited resources. Using successive rounds of mental problem-solving with geometric puzzles, they discovered that each subsequent puzzle solved resulted in a depletion of mental energy reserves and a loss of productivity. Mentally orienting Mohs specimens requires geometric mental imaging processes similar to those required for solving puzzles. Although most Mohs surgeons may be unaware of the mental effort required, simple techniques to reduce unnecessary expenditure of mental energy may enhance a Mohs surgeon’s ability to sustain or increase productivity throughout the day and reduce mental fatigue. One of the authors (AC), who has used both methods, reports that this minor modification saves time interpreting Mohs sections and annotating areas of positivity and reduces mental fatigue.
