opportunity for data collection which are associated with a first-pass study. Once collected, the data are suitable for either conventional ejection fraction analysis or phase measurement. Availability of equipment will be the major factor influencing the choice of approach. Mmode echocardiography is widely available and two-dimensional echocardiography is rapidly becoming more so. Of the 'radionuclide techniques, equilibrium studies are less demanding of gamma camera performance than first-pass studies. Some of the modern developments require sophisticated data-processing devices, and short-lived radionuclides are not widely available. Whichever approach is chosen, it is well to bear in mind that the right ventricle does not function in isolation and that all techniques have their own particular disadvantages which must be considered in the interpretation of experimental findings.
