Patients with oesophageal varic reatment under two separate sets of circumstances. These are for the management of acute variceal bleeding and for treatment to prevent recurrent variceal bleeding after a previous haemorrhage. Treatment in both areas remains controversial. In managing acute variceal bleeding it is essential to confirm that the haemorrhage is from oesophageal varices. Thus, emergency endoscopy is mandatory in all patients with massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding in whom bleeding varices
