[Abstract]: The main aim of this chapter is to introduce the reader to the conceptof testing and to the principles that underpin the practice of educational andpsychological testing. The first part of this chapter is devoted to that aim. Asecond aim of the chapter is to examine applications of testing under theheadings of educational, industrial, and clinical. Examples will beintroduced from the author's own work to illustrate various applications. Afinal aim is to discuss some of the issues and controversies that surround thetheory and practice of testing. By the end of the chapter, the reader shouldhave an understanding of the techniques used in test validation and shouldbe familiar with some of the main applications of educational andpsychological tests.
