Time-dependent trends in the incidence of cardiovascular disease have been reported in high-income countries. Because atherosclerosis underlies the majority of cardiovascular diseases, we investigated temporal changes in the composition of atherosclerotic plaques removed from patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy.
