T he conceptual basis for understanding regulation of gene transcription in mammalian cells has advanced dramatically in recent years, and research in this field has spawned powerful new experimental techniques. This review will summarize some of these advances and illustrate their application to problems of special interest to cardiovascular investigators as well as their increasing relevance to cardiovascular medicine.
