During the fall and winter of 1950-1951 a group of student nurses was seen with a syndrome, which, to our knowledge, has not been reported previously. The common characteristic of all cases was incapacitating pain and exquisite tenderness along the course of the superficial venous tracts of one or more extremities. Numerous clinical, epidemiologic and laboratory investigations were made without establishing a specific etiologic diagnosis. Several cases are reported in detail to illustrate the condition.
