The Effect of Venous Occlusion on Serum Cholesterol and Total Protein Concentration—A Warning

Serum total cholesterol and total protein concentrations are increased with venous occlusion lasting longer than 2 minutes probably due to hemoconcentration. The range of per cent increase in cholesterol and total protein is as large as 19.8 and 41.0 and 20.0 and 33.5 respectively at the end of 5- and 10-minute periods of venous occlusion. This error introduces serious mistakes in the measurement of this important component of the mechanism of atherogenesis.
