the globe. He was keen and contributed a lot to help physicians from the countries with a gap in their knowledge of allergy and with limited resources. He travelled to these places to teach and help them locally. Allergists and many who know you from around the world will miss you Carlos, but we will always feel your presence in some way. G. Walter Canonica , Genoa Rudolf Valenta , Vienna Ruby Pawankar , Tokyo We are truly saddened by the news that Professor Carlos E. Baena-Cagnani passed away unexpectedly in Ascochinga, Cόrdoba Province, Argentina, on New Year’s Eve. But we can all take solace from the fact that he was surrounded by his family at the time. He was celebrating with his well-known ‘joie de vivre’ – the same joie de vivre and enthusiasm that he put into all his initiatives: humanitarian, scientific, educational and societal. He had a very special personality with charisma, passion and generosity. His career started in Spain, in Pamplona, with Albert Oehling, who was a mentor for Carlos in science and in life. In Argentina, he trained several allergists. He rapidly became a reference person in his part of the world, where he promoted GARD and joined the executive committees of both GINA and ARIA. Carlos had a prestigious career in scientific societies, always in favour of collegiality and cooperation. He was president of the AAAeIC (Argentinian Association of Allergy and Clinical Immunology), the Latin American Society of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the World Allergy Organization and, lately, INTERASMA (International Association of Asthmology). He contributed enormously in modernizing and promoting all of these societies, serving as their ambassador all over the world. He was also a prolific scientific writer, publishing papers in the most prestigious journals of the discipline. Carlos had a global perspective, an embracing attitude and a feel for reaching out and helping. He was not limited to his own region or the developed world, but always tried to understand the needs of people from all around Published online: February 6, 2015
