PLT yields were the same, but significantly less donor blood was processed by the COBE, giving better efficiency for equivalent donor PLT counts. The COBE procedure used more ACD-A, but resulted in no significantly greater change in donor Ca++, although more hypocalce-mic symptoms (facial paresthesias) were noted by COBE donors. Both FEN and COBE provided high quality PLT collections, with COBE resulting in significantly less WBC contamination but more donor symptomatology.
