The long-standing Editor of this journal, Prof. Dr. J. H. Holzner, celebrated his 70th birthday on December 3,1994. Born in Bregenz in Vorarlberg/West Austria, he began his professional training at the Pathological Institute of the University of Vienna (Prof. H. Chiari). In 1958/59 he worked at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York under Prof. H. Popper and in 1963 became the Head of the Department of Gyneco-Pathology at the ∏nd Gynecological University Clinic in Vienna where he was a university lecturer in 1966. In 1969, at the age of 45, he was appointed to a professorship and the directorate of the Pathological Institute at the University of Vienna. Up to the time of his retirement in September of 1993, the institute, which is responsible for a clinic with over 2,000 beds and a very large number of students, was structured into very specialized departments. Among them, the ones for bone pathology (Prof. Mechthilde Salzer-Kuntschik), for hemato-pathology (Prof. Radaskiewicz, Prof. Holzner’s successor) and ultrastructural pathology and cell biology (Prof. Dr. Kerjaski) are particularly well-known. On a national level, Prof. Holzner was the President of the Austrian Cancer Society -Cancer Help for many years and has remained the Vice-Presi-dent of the highest advisory board of the Ministry of Health, the highest member of the Public Health Department. On the international level Prof. Holzner was the President of the German Society for Pathology, member of the German Academy of Naturalists Leopoldina (since 1993 as adjunct), President of the European Society of Pathology (1991-1993), Council Member of the UICC (until 1990, now a member of the Nomination Committee). He was written approximately 230 publications covering practically all branches of pathology as well as a three-volume textbook for pathology in several editions. He bears the highest scientific honor awarded in his country, namely the Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst I. Klasse. Still carrying out numerous duties and obligations following his retirement, Prof. Holzner is highly recognized by his colleagues, associates and a wide public because of his wise, modest and in high degree winning personality. Prof. Holzner was one of the founding members of the journal ONKOLOGIE launched in 1978. He was one of the editors jointly responsible for the journal until 1990 and laid the foundation for the international dissemination of this journal. In the name of S. Karger AG, the editors, the scientific advisory board and, last but not least, the readers, we wish to thank him and wish him all the best for the future. H. Huber, Vienna W. Queißer, Mannheim
