portant findings. He studied extensively Gaucher disease, cloned the gene and developed replacement treatment for it. He has authored more than 800 publications, 19 books and more than 300 book chapters. He has trained many students who occupy high positions all over the world. He remained active and productive until his last days. At the 2007 ASH Annual Meeting, he was awarded the inaugural Wallace H. Coulter Award for Lifetime Achievement in Hematology, honoring his lifelong work in promoting the understanding of a variety of hematological disorders. Dr. Beutler was a member of the Editorial Board of Acta Haematologica for more than two decades, contributed several works and was a critical reviewer of many submitted manuscripts. In a personal capacity, he was always available for advice and help. He was a close friend and his death is a great loss for the world of science and for all of us. He was a legendary figure in hematology and his many important contributions to different topics had a profound impact on all of us as well as the field of hematology. His illustrious career started with his investigations on the pathogenesis of hemolytic anemia induced by antimalarials leading to the discovery of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
