Every year, more than 795,000 Americans experience a stroke, 87% of which are ischemic strokes caused by a blockage of blood flow to the brain.1 Carotid artery stenosis is a significant cause of this blockage of blood flow to the brain, directly increasing the risk of transient ischemic attacks and ischemic stroke. Carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is one of the surgical procedures most commonly performed for carotid artery stenosis in addition to carotid artery stenting (CAS). In this article, we will cover a concise review of the perioperative management in CEA.
