The volute is one of the key components of acentrifugal compressor. The design of the volute not only impactsthe compressor efficiency but also influences the operatingrange. The detailed flow simulation presented here helps tobetter understand the volute flow mechanisms and provide designguidance in volute design to meet performance goals. In thisstudy, the viscous Navier-Stokes equations are used to simulatethe flow inside the vaneless diffuser and volute. The detailedflow structures for different volute tongue geometries arestudied in detail. The numerical calculations are compared withexperimental data and good agreement is found. The results alsosuggest direction for further investigations in volute design
