Growing ubiquity and safety relevance of embeddedsystems strengthen the need to protect their functionality againstmalicious attacks. Communication and system authenticationby digital signature schemes is a major issue in securing suchsystems. This contribution presents a complete ECDSA signatureprocessing system over prime fields for bit lengths of up to 256on reconfigurable hardware. By using dedicated hardware implementation, the performance can be improved by up to two ordersof magnitude compared to microcontroller implementations. Theflexible system is tailored to serve as an autonomous subsystemproviding authentication transparent for any application. Integrationinto a vehicle-to-vehicle communication system is shownas an application example
