The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) announced gains in the total number of people living with HIV/AIDS worldwide for the year 2007. This was attributed to the increase in access to antiretroviral therapy in low- and middle-income countries. However, nearly 7000 new cases of HIV infection occurred each day of the same year. We propose that the number of new HIV infections need to be reduced, by the use of prevention methods, to have a significant impact on the epidemic. We could better control HIV/AIDS only through the integration of therapeutic and multiple prevention strategies elaborated on a community-based approach. Prevention and treatment must be scaled up in a balanced way.
