The use of magnetic separators in the various mineralprocessing facilities in South Africa is described. A largenumber are used to recover medium in dense medium plants. Themanufacture of various types of magnetic separation machines bythree local suppliers is highlighted. The potential use of highgradientand/or high–intensity magnetic separation in the recoveryof gold, uranium, and phosphate minerals is discussed.
