'Smart grid' refers to the communication network between a user of energy and the utility company or between one utility and another. A true smart grid would include and monitor distributed generation (a facility dedicated to the production of energy to support local loads) and energy storage technologies. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology involves the feeding of an electric vehicle (EV)'s stored energy into the grid. As grid regulation using EVs increases, V2G technology is being incorporated as a resource for regulation by the utility ancillary services market. This article explores the future of the smart grid and the associated role of V2G. It highlights the important role that EVs can play in the improving the electric transmission system.
