A perspective picture of radiation mutagenesis, the sequence of events which leads from the absorption of radiation to the eventual recovery of mutants, is presented. A model of the mechanism of mutational events in microorganisms modifiable by postirradiation treatments is proposed and applied to the interpretation of the differences in mutation rate at various stages of germ cells of a higher organism, the silkworm.
