The electromagnetic form factors of the proton at asymptotically large space-like momen tum transfers are studied on the basis of usual relativistic field theory. On the assumptiOn of convergence of the Low equation, we obtain the asymptotic sum rules which relate the form factors to the real part of the on-mass-shell proton-proton elastic scattermg amp! itudes. The rough evaluation of the sum rules for the 4-momentum transfer squared t up to ~-700 GeV 2 is made with the information of high energy scattenng experiments at the ISR. The usual "dipole" behavior of the form factors has not been expected. Some interesting f ea tures of. the asymptotic behavwr of form factors have emerged.
