Effects of the gamma -3 pi interaction on the electromagnetic properties of the deuteron are examined by making use of the effective interaction Hamiltonian suggested from the isoscalar part of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon. The contribution of the gamma -3 pi interaction to the magnetic moment of the deuteron is unreasonably large, namely comparable with the observed value, aithough this resuIt depends strongly on the inner part of the deuteron wave function and the pion dissociation probability of the nucleon. The electric quadrupole moment due to the gamma -3 pi interaction is about 20% of the observed value. The gamma -3 pi interaction also contributes to the photodisintegration of the deuteron through the Ml and E2 transitions with the /sup 3/8 + /sup 3/D final state. The interference term between the usual El term and that herein contributes appreciably to an asymmetry in the angular distribution. (auth)
