Mössbauer spectra and electric dipole moment data are reported for R 2 SnCl 2 and RSnCl 3 complexes with Y type ligands where R = C 4 H 9 , C 6 H 5 and Y = Ph 3 PO, Ph 3 AsO, Bu 3 PO, and Ph 3 P. Quadrupole splittings and dipole moments are consistent with trans C—Sn—C bonds in the R 2 SnQ 2 Y 2 complexes. In the trigonal bipyramidal Ph 2 SnCl 2 Y complexes, the two phenyl groups are assumed to be in equatorial positions. Data for the RSnCl 3 Y 2 complexes suggest that in BuSnCl 3 (Ph 3 AsO) 2 and BuSnCl 3 -(Ph 3 P) 2 two Cl atoms are trans and that in BuSnCl 3 (Ph 3 PO) 2 and PhSnCl 3 (Ph 3 PO) 2 the three Cl atoms are cis.
