The vapor phase chlorination and bromination of deuteriochloroform has been carried out in the presence of the corresponding hydrogen halide. The halogenations demonstrated the reversibility of the abstraction reaction by atomic bromine while the chlorination reactions failed to show any evidence for a reversible abstraction.
