ELECTRODIAGNOSTIC examination (EMG) can be of considerable help in the diagnosis of various muscle disorders. However, the electrical abnormalities of diseased muscle are rarely pathognomonic of one particular condition and, as with other specialised techniques, the results are of most value when correlated with the results of other investigations. The examiner should fully appraise the history, the clinical state of the patient and other available data in order to decide which muscles to study and which procedures will produce the most information with the least disturbance to the patient.
